Fatigued after days of competition, animal science senior Helen Dubee stood anxiously with her teammates as the awards were announced at this year’s Sierra-Cascade logging conference.

“We were all so tired because it had been three days of just non-stop working and doing all the events,” she said. “When they told us we won, we kind of all freaked out like ‘oh my god, it actually worked.’”

When the sawdust settled, the Cal Poly logging team brought home their first championship title since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. The team now has its sights set on the Association of Western Forestry Clubs (AWFC) national conference in Montana this April.

Cal Poly provides their students to gain hands-on experience in fields of study. However, there are many opportunities at the university to explore interests that don’t directly pertain to their academic field. As spring registration approaches, students have opportunities to enroll in highly-unique classes such as pickleball, guitar and bowling.

Twisted N Tossed is a new food vendor that is popping up at local San Luis Obispo breweries. Founder, Pamela Guizar, focuses her time on picking out local ingredients and creating farm-to-table food options.

Helen Abraha’s passion for cooking drove her, her sister, and two other business partners to create Ebony, the first Ethiopian restaurant on the Central Coast. 

Corazón 805 Tacos, founded by a pair of San Luis Obispo locals in 2018, serves a crafted menu of tacos, tostadas and quesadillas influenced by the head chef’s 30 years of culinary experience as well as the owners’ roots in Chiapas and Guerrero, Mexico, all atop fresh, homemade tortillas.
